Upward Spirals: How Momentum Builds Progress

If you’ve worked with me before, you’ve probably heard me say, “Life is about momentum.” When good things happen, they often lead to more good things. In therapy, we call this an upward spiral.

An upward spiral might start with a bit of luck, but when progress keeps showing up, it usually means something deeper is at play. Calling it “just luck” can take away from the effort and growth that helped make it happen.

Think about someone who finally gets multiple job offers after months of nothing. It might feel like success came out of nowhere, but more likely, they have been improving their resume, applying regularly, going to interviews, and sticking with it through the quiet times.

Or think about how your mood can lift after your child brings home a good grade. That boost can spill over into how you show up at work or with others. These moments tend to build off each other, even when we are not fully aware of it.

Instead of asking, “Why do some people have all the luck?” it might be more helpful to ask, “What habits or choices am I already making that are starting to help?” Most upward spirals grow from small, steady steps repeated over time.

The hardest part is often the middle, the quiet space between effort and results. That is when doubt creeps in. It is when your mind starts going over past choices or worrying about what is next. Therapy can help you manage those thoughts, stay grounded, and keep moving forward.

Upward spirals do not always feel exciting while they are happening. They usually feel like practice. But over time, those small wins add up, and that is where real change begins to take shape.
